What is a SCHUKO socket, and how does it differ from an industrial CEE socket?

SCHUKO is the German earthed socket (CEE 7/3): 16A 230V, 2P+E, no earth pin — earthing is through the side clips. How it differs from industrial CEE, the national variants, and the models we stock.

What SCHUKO is

SCHUKO is short for the German Schutzkontakt (protective contact) and refers to the German earthed socket, CEE 7/3: 16A 230V, 2P+E. Its most obvious feature is that it has no earth pin — earthing is made through metal clips on both sides of the socket contacting the sides of the plug. Sockets usually have a shutter to prevent accidental contact.

How it differs from an industrial CEE socket

SCHUKO (German)Industrial CEE (IEC 60309)
PositioningDomestic / office / light commercialIndustrial environments
RangeEssentially 16A 230V 2P+E only16A–125A, many voltages and pole counts, clock position as mistake-proofing
ProtectionMostly IP20; shrouded versions reach IP44 and aboveIP44 / IP67 / IP69
Mechanical strengthModerateDesigned for sites and workshops
InterchangeabilityOnly between countries using the same standardCross-brand mating within the same specification

Conclusion: use industrial CEE in workshops, outdoors, in damp areas and wherever mechanical damage is possible; SCHUKO belongs in offices, next to control cabinets and on light-duty equipment.

Reading the MENNEKES 93xx series: 9322 / 9342 / 9372 / 9382 compared
93xx is the MENNEKES wall-mounted IP67 industrial socket series. The last digit gives the voltage, the third digit the poles and current. The full 9300–9382 table and the four comparisons people ask about most.
Can MENNEKES sockets be interchanged with other CEE brands? Check the clock position first
Interchangeability is not about the brand but four things: current, poles, clock position and IP rating. With the clock positions we verified against our own stock (110V = 4h, 230V single-phase = 6h, 400V 3-pole = 9h, 400V 4/5-pole = 6h, 500V = 7h).
Counting poles on industrial plugs and sockets: 3P / 4P / 5P explained
One model is written 3P on one page and "3-pole" on another — it is the same number, and the earth is always counted. With a table checked against the manufacturer datasheets (voltage and clock position included).
What people call industrial sockets: add-on = panel-mounted = flush-mounted
The same product has several names: add-on socket, panel-mounted socket and flush-mounted socket are the same thing, while wall-mounted is a different one. A full glossary so you quote the right model.
16A / 32A / 63A / 125A: how to pick the rating in three steps
The rating follows the equipment current with at least 20% headroom: 16A ≈ 7.5kW, 32A ≈ 15kW, 63A ≈ 30kW, 125A ≈ 60kW (three-phase 380V). With the conversion formulas and the four commonest mistakes.
